Dr. José Maria Viéitez brings to Pivotal over 30 years of comprehensive practical clinical experience in oncology. He joined Pivotal in January 2020 as Medical Director, Oncology to lead the oncology medical division at Pivotal and provide scientific and medical support to Pivotal´s clients throughout all phases of the drug development lifecycle.
Before this, he worked as a practicing Medical Oncologist at Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias, Spain (1992-2007), then as Head of the gastrointestinal and neuroendocrine tumours of the Medical Oncology Unit at the said Hospital (2012 to 2017) and lately, from January 2018, as Head of Medical Oncology (Digestive Tumours) at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Madrid, Spain. In parallel, he held the position of professor during more than 10 years at the School of Medicine, University of Oviedo.
José María is a seasoned clinical oncologist and a research-oriented scientist. He participated in 4 public-funded research projects in glioblastoma and colorectal cancer and in a Nanooncology group. He participated in over 19 closed non-public financed clinical trials, 12 research projects in colorectal cancer, 3 in endocrinology and 4 in gastric cancer in phases II to IV, all as Principal Investigator. During this period, he has authored or co-authored 61 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 120 abstracts, 18 oral presentations at high impact congresses and 17 book chapters.
José María received his medical degree from Clinica Universitaria de Navarra, Spain in 1988 and graduated as Medical Oncologist in 1992. Additionally, he completed the PhD doctoral program in Medicine and Surgery at Clínica Universitaria de Navarra, Spain in 1993.
